David has worked as the arts editor of Monday Magazine and the managing editor of explore: Canada’s Outdoor Magazine (where he won a Canadian Society of Magazine Editors award for best front-of-the-book section), and continues as a contributing editor for explore and Financial Post Business magazines. His freelance writing has appeared in such publications as The Globe and Mail, Canadian Geographic, Toro, TIME Canada and British Columbia magazine. He has helped edit several manuscripts (including Colin Angus’s Beyond the Horizon), while his own first book, Fatal Tide: When the Race of a Lifetime Goes Wrong, was published by Viking Canada last year and won a Special Jury Mention at the Banff Mountain Book Festival. As an associate professor and director of professional writing at UVic’s Department of Writing, David coaches students to become better writers and better editors.

PEAVI Workshop - The Secrets of Syntax (Sunday, March 22, 2009)

Workshop

The Secrets of Syntax - presented by Frances Peck

We’ve all flipped a sentence around, or dismantled it and then recombined it, only to discover better clarity, emphasis, or flow. Why does that happen, and how can we become more adept at manipulating word order—or syntax—to improve prose? This seminar looks at syntax from various angles, including how to shape it for different documents and readers. Topics covered include subordination and coordination, periodic versus cumulative sentences, proximity of subject and verb, echo words, and special techniques such as ellipsis and isolation.

Frances Peck specializes in stylistic editing, copy editing, and plain language writing and rewriting, and writes freelance articles on language. She has also taught writing and editing courses, mainly through the University of Ottawa, since 1986. Two of her courses are now being offered through the Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing as part of the SFU Summer Publishing Workshops.
